When I grabbed the GPS, I decided to compare GPS systems to see what would be best for me. I had only a vague idea of what these remarkable devices. I knew that the card is mainly electronic, but I had no idea how they work, or what was important, when buying a glance. So I decided to do some 'research.

My first stop was to check Amazon, to their best seller. (Just click on my link below to view the same information.)

I immediately understoodthat Garmin, Magellan and Tom Tom has dominated the market. I had heard Garmin, Magellan and Tom Tom, I had never heard. My joy to see who are the best sellers of GPS devices were soon destroyed by an overwhelming sense of confusion, as I clicked on each item, read the description and tried to head or tails out of the differences between the devices do.

There were some pretty big differences, I thought, because the prices ranged from a minimum of about $ 150 to nearly$ 1000 for the type of portable, you can stick to the windshield to remove and if you do not get the car.

Well, suffice to say, I have a tremendous amount of research and became an expert of sorts.

To save time and frustration, I tell you the basics of what I discovered.

While there are several manufacturers of portable automotive GPS systems, the three most important are Garmin, Magellan and Tom Tom. Garmin sells about half ofAutomotive GPS Systems in the world, but Tom Tom is quickly catching up. All three companies make a good product, it's just that understanding the differences between the three producers and their products is a bit 'difficult.

Garmin has two main lines of automotive GPS systems, the nüvi and Pilot Street. The functionality of each row overlapping small thing certainly has its price.

In general, the nüvi leaner, more compact unit. TheirInterface (like you), the system is not as simple as the StreetPilot interface. Garmin Nuvi to come in a wide range of prices below $ 200 for the Nuvi 200 to almost $ 1000 for the Nuvi 770 price point is Nüvi usually have some characteristics more like pilots Street.

The main difference between the pilot and the Garmin Street, but these are, for Garmin Nuvi has a very sensitive receiver, and Street riders do not have. Nüvi weighs about halfAs Pilots Street. (None of these units is difficult, but pilots Street weighs almost 10 grams, where nüvi slighlty heavier than 5 ounces.

The biggest difference between the two entities is the user interface. StreetPilot C series was specifically very intuitive and user-friendly. This does not mean the Nuvi are not, are not only super easy, as the pilots Street.

Tom Tom devices that compete directly with Garmin. The Tom Tom One is suchcomparable with the Garmin Nuvi 200, Garmin entry-level product. Both are simple, GPS systems, which are pre-loaded maps are touch screen and voice instructions. The Tom Tom One has a battery with only 2 hours average life, in which the Nuvi will take an average of 5 hours the battery.

I think the tom tom is not as smooth look to the nüvi, although the quality seems to be comparable.

Magellan's market share of Garmin or Tom Tom, butstill build a good product. Magellan Maestro 3100 is a top seller on Amazon. In both pricing and features, is comparable with the Tom Tom One and the Garmin units at lower prices, both in terms of size and weight. Magellan says that its battery holds up to three hours, fifty percent better than the Tom Tom.

One major difference between the least expensive GPS systems and the most expensive is the number of points of interest "in the database of the device.

Are the points of interestpreloaded hotels, restaurants, places, hospitals, virtually anywhere you go, as they are contained in the database of devices. Magellan Maestro is, for example, 750,000 points of interest. The Garmin Nuvi 200 is about 6 million!

If you intend to use your GPS on the move, with more points of interest provision could be a key element, and if we consider the distances, 750,000 products, not just as many.

AnotherIt is a feature that I think is important is the Bluetooth technology. Them more expensive devices can function as a phone (both incoming and outgoing). It 'hard enough (and even banned in some countries), driving and talking on your cell phone. Add to your GPS to the mix, and … well, you should pull to the side of the road. In my eyes, to keep pace with the equipment less the better.
